Origin of raw materials

Persimmon and Orange Extra Jam with Walnuts and ‘Douro’ Muscatel

Persimmon originates from China, although it is much more popular in Japan. In Portugal, two predominant varieties can be found: red and orange. The first one is the most common, presenting itself in its mature state as a very sweet and soft fruit, requiring great care to carry out its transport. The second variety is much tougher and does not require great care in handling. Its fruit, known as persimmon or Japanese apricot, contains a large amount of water and is low in calories, vitamins are part of its composition in addition to proteins, iron and calcium.

Kiwi Extra Jam with ‘Douro’ Muscatel

Kiwi is the fruit of a climbing plant that shares the same name and belongs to the Actinidaceae family, the most common species being Actinidia deliciosa. The origin of this exotic fruit dates back to the early 20th century in China. From here, it was transported to New Zealand by missionaries. The first plantations took place decades later. In 1961, this fruit appeared for the first time in a restaurant in the United States of America, and this country the main responsible for its production, distribution and commercialization.
